The Los Angeles Dodgers have faced numerous injuries throughout the season, and now they are hoping to avoid a major setback with first baseman Freddie Freeman. During Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres, Freeman left in the seventh inning due to an apparent ankle injury. After securing the NL West title with a 7-2 victory, Freeman was seen wearing a walking boot and using crutches in the clubhouse.
Following the game, Freeman underwent X-rays which came back negative. Despite his swollen ankle, Freeman remains hopeful that he will be able to play in the playoffs.
The injury occurred as Freeman sprinted down the first-base line to beat out a throw from Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth. While trying to stop his momentum after stepping on first base, he rolled his right ankle. Mookie Betts, who was on second base at that time, couldn’t believe what had happened.
Freeman walked off the field with manager Dave Roberts and a trainer while Dodger Stadium held its breath. Kiké Hernández took over at first base for him in the eighth inning.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman expressed confidence that they don’t need to rush Freeman’s return since they have no games this weekend that require his presence. Instead of traveling with the team for their final series against Colorado, Freeman will stay home for additional treatm
