Meta introduces AI filmmaker to compete with OpenAI’s Sora

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and facebook, is introducing artificial intelligence (AI) models that can create realistic videos ⁣based on text instructions. These models will compete with similar offerings from OpenAI and Runway,⁣ targeting filmmakers and content creators. The suite of storytelling models ⁣called Movie Gen ‌can perform various tasks ‍such as‍ generating videos up to 16 seconds long, video editing, matching sounds to videos, and personalizing videos with specific images.

While Meta has released some examples of videos generated by its⁢ AI models, it does not ⁢expect these models to be integrated into its platforms for users until next year at the earliest. Connor Hayes,⁢ Meta’s vice-president of generative AI products, acknowledged that current video editing or generation features in Instagram may not meet ⁢user expectations in terms of speed. However, he believes these AI models could be powerful tools ⁣for creating and editing Reels across the family of apps.

The push⁢ for video-generation tools by tech companies like Meta is part of a broader effort to monetize their advancements ⁤in AI within the ‍entertainment industry. Runway recently signed a deal with Lionsgate to train a custom model using films from their library. Meanwhile, OpenAI has been showcasing its own video-generation model called Sora to the film industry.

Meta claims that⁣ its AI-generated videos surpass⁢ those produced by competitors like Sora and Runway in terms‌ of overall quality, motion, naturalness, and consistency. The company conducted blind human evaluations as evidence supporting‌ this claim.

Although Meta did not provide specific details about the data used to train its models other than mentioning a combination of licensed and publicly ‍available ‍datasets were⁣ utilized; it⁢ assured users that any generated videos would be watermarked to avoid copyright concerns or potential issues related to deepfakes.

Concerns have been raised ⁢regarding how these AI‌ tools may impact jobs within the entertainment industry. However, Meta emphasized that generative AI is not intended as a replacement for artists and animators’ work but rather seeks⁤ feedback from filmmakers and creators during development.

In conclusion: Meta’s introduction of AI-powered video-generation tools aims at providing Hollywood filmmakers artists influencers with innovative capabilities on their social ‌networks while addressing concerns surrounding copyright infringement issues associated with deepfakes through watermarking techniques
