Survey: Anticipated 1,200+ Candidates for Japan’s Lower House Election Attributed to Opposition’s Lack of Cooperation

According to a survey conducted by Yomiuri Shimbun on Wednesday, more than 1,200 ⁢candidates are ⁤expected to participate in the upcoming House‍ of Representatives election on October 27. This number is likely to increase as parties prepare to field additional candidates. In the previous⁣ lower ⁣house election in 2021, there were 1,051 candidates.

For the single-seat‌ constituency election with 289 seats up for grabs, it is anticipated that ‌around 1,080 candidates will run. This significantly surpasses ‌the number of candidates (857) who ran in the previous election. ⁣The lack of cooperation among opposition parties seems to be a contributing factor ⁤as various parties are moving forward with their own candidates.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) plans to field 267 ⁢candidates, excluding former lawmakers who have not been endorsed due to their involvement in a political funds scandal. LDP’s coalition partner Komeito intends to field candidates in 11 constituencies. On the other hand, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan is set to field 207 candidates.

In the proportional representation election with 176 seats available, it is expected that over 780 candidates will run. This includes those ‌who are also running in the single-seat constituencies.

this upcoming⁢ House of Representatives election promises a large pool of diverse and competitive candidate ⁣options for voters across Japan.
