The University of Tokyo has climbed one spot to 28th place in the latest World University Rankings released by British magazine Times Higher Education. This makes it the highest-ranking Japanese institution on the list. The University of Oxford in Britain maintained its position at the top for the ninth consecutive year. The rankings evaluated a total of 2,092 institutions from 115 countries and regions, using criteria such as research environment, research quality, and international outlook. In addition to the University of Tokyo, four other Japanese universities secured spots in the top 200, with no change from last year’s results. Kyoto University remained at 55th place, Tohoku University moved up from 130th to 120th place, Osaka University improved from 175th to 162nd place, and Tokyo Institute of Technology (now merged with Tokyo Medical and Dental University) dropped from 191st to 195th place. In terms of overall rankings, Massachusetts Institute of Technology came second followed by Harvard University; both are based in the United States. The top ten positions were dominated by institutions from the US and UK. Tsinghua University in China was ranked as Asia’s highest university at number twelve on the list.
