Some Tampa Bay area schools in Florida remain closed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which caused heavy flooding and strong wind gusts. In Hillsborough County, public schools will be closed until Friday, October 11. This decision was made to convert schools into shelters for evacuees and allow families and staff time to prepare their own storm plans. Westminster Academy will also be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Monday being a normal day but no afterschool care provided.
Pasco County Schools announced that all schools and district offices will be closed from Monday to Wednesday (October 7-9). All extracurricular activities, athletic events, and after-school programs are also canceled during this time.
Pinellas County Schools and offices will remain closed until Friday, October 11. All sports activities and school events scheduled for these dates are also canceled.
Polk County Public Schools will remain open on Monday but cancel or reschedule after-school programs and sports activities. However, all Polk County Public Schools offices and campuses will be closed from Tuesday to Thursday (October 8-10) in response to the storm.
The School District of Manatee County has decided to close all its schools from Monday through Wednesday (October 7-9). Further updates regarding the rest of the week’s schedule will be communicated once shelter operations conclude.
Hernando County’s statement confirms that all Hernando schools and district offices are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 8-9), with a decision about reopening expected midweek. During this closure period, before-and-after-school care services are suspended along with canceled or rescheduled after-school activities.
Citrus County School District has announced closures for Thursday (October 10) as well as Friday (October 11), due to Hurricane Milton impacting the area until early Thursday morning. After-school extracurricular activities are also canceled for the entire week.
Sarasota County traditional public schools have been closed from Monday through Wednesday (October 7-9) in preparation for possible shelter openings. Updates can be found on their social media channels.
Saint Leo University campuses in Tampa area locations including University Campus, Tampa Education Center, Center for Adult Learning at University Campus/Pasco-Hernando State College locations will remain shut from Monday through Thursday (October 7-10).
