The 4th Congressional District, located primarily in the Town of Hempstead, holds significant importance in the upcoming House of Representatives election. This area in Nassau County reflects the prevailing political trends of 2024. Questions arise regarding the impact of protecting reproductive rights on suburban women and independents, as well as concerns about immigration and border security due to New York City’s struggle with an influx of migrants. Additionally, there is speculation about whether Kamala Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket will drive high turnout from minority and Asian voters in this district. Another factor to consider is whether Orthodox and conservative Jewish voters will further unite behind Donald Trump.
Republican incumbent Anthony P. D’Esposito, 42, from Island Park, is defending his seat against attorney Laura A. Gillen, 55, from Rockville Centre. This race also represents another chapter in Gillen’s fight against patronage and crony-contract politics that led to her surprising victory as town supervisor in 2017.
Gillen’s opposition to nepotism stems from D’Esposito’s questionable actions prior to his election to Congress. He was appointed to a town council seat while on unpaid leave as an NYPD detective and later secured a full-time position at the Nassau County Board of Elections alongside his councilman salary. The editorial board criticized these actions along with other instances where D’Esposito allegedly used his influence for personal gain.
Despite these controversies surrounding D’Esposito’s tenure, he remains a potential candidate for Hempstead supervisor next year if current officeholder Don Clavin chooses a judgeship instead.
In terms of policy goals, D’Esposito acknowledges that mass deportation is unrealistic but believes focus should be placed on removing those who break the law. He has also proposed special taxing districts for residents living on canals to address flooding issues within his coastal district.
Gillen advocates for closing the southern border more effectively while expediting asylum claims determination processes. She also seeks an overhaul of the immigration system that encourages individuals to apply for legal status within their home countries before coming here.
Furthermore, Gillen emphasizes federal involvement in flood insurance programs and increased funding for water quality improvements—particularly in areas with cancer clusters within her district—as well as tougher negotiations with drug companies regarding prescription drug prices.
Considering all factors discussed above, Newsday’s editorial board endorses Laura A. Gillen as their preferred candidate for the 4th District congressional seat.
