Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is facing a decline in popularity as the US presidential election draws near, according to recent polls. Three polls released on Sunday indicate that Harris’s lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump has either narrowed or disappeared completely. The latest NBC News poll shows the candidates tied at 48 percent nationally, a significant shift from Harris’s five-point lead in the same survey last month. In the ABC News/Ipsos poll, Harris leads with 50 percent compared to Trump’s 48 percent among likely voters, down from her six-point lead in the previous month’s poll. Similarly, the CBS News/YouGov poll reveals that Harris is ahead with 51 percent of likely voters’ support, compared to Trump’s 48 percent. These tightening numbers have raised concerns among Democrats about Harris’s ability to secure support from key constituencies such as Hispanics and African Americans. While she maintains a lead among women of all races, she has struggled to generate enthusiasm among men within these communities who have increasingly shown support for Trump in recent years.
The New York Times/Siena College polls released over the weekend also highlight lower levels of support for Harris among Black and Hispanic voters compared to previous Democratic nominees in both the 2020 and 2016 elections. Former President Barack Obama addressed this issue during a campaign event in Pittsburgh on Thursday, expressing his disappointment with Black men who are not showing as much enthusiasm for Harris as they did for him during his own campaigns.
Both candidates continue their campaigns focused on battleground states. On Sunday, Harris criticized Trump at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina for spreading misinformation about hurricane response efforts by undermining trust in government information sources. Meanwhile, Trump called for an increase of 10,000 Border Patrol agents during his rally in Prescott Valley Arizona and pledged to seek congressional approval for salary raises and bonuses if re-elected.
As Election Day approaches rapidly, it remains uncertain how these shifting poll numbers will impact each candidate’s chances of winning.
