The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has launched a new initiative in Quebec to assist members of the Chinese community in reporting harassment from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This move is unexpected as Quebec is not typically associated with having a large Chinese population, unlike cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. The program, which commenced in early July, utilizes social media videos in Chinese, French, and English to reach out to the community. The RCMP aims to combat interference by the CCP and hopes to alleviate what they refer to as a “climate of fear” among the Chinese community in Quebec.
To establish trust, uniformed RCMP officers have been visiting Chinese neighborhoods in Quebec. They are encouraging individuals who feel threatened by the Beijing regime to come forward and assuring them that they do not have to face these issues alone. This new approach underscores the significance of connecting with the community and addressing their concerns for the RCMP.
There is growing concern about CCP harassment within Chinese communities across Canada, and this program implemented in Quebec highlights these apprehensions. According to The Epoch Times, an RCMP spokesperson in Quebec believes that this program will empower people with confidence to report instances of harassment and stand up against fear propagated by the CCP.
The timing of this initiative holds significance due to escalating tensions between China and Canada over recent years, with increasing concerns regarding espionage, intimidation, and foreign influence. The RCMP’s efforts against CCP interference aim at fostering a safe environment for all individuals rather than solely focusing on specific individuals.
Additionally, this program draws attention towards the unique experiences of the Chinese diaspora residing in Quebec. By engaging with this community directly, it demonstrates that the RCMP is committed to ensuring that all citizens feel secure and included irrespective of their background. Many individuals including Sophie Durocher – a columnist from Quebec - support this program as it sends a strong message both domestically within Canada as well as internationally towards China regarding human rights advocacy and democracy promotion.
