Osaka prefectural police have apprehended a 51-year-old police sergeant for allegedly assaulting a station security guard on Thursday afternoon.
According to reports from Sankei Shimbun, the officer, Hiroshi Yokohama, admitted to being intoxicated and claimed to have no recollection of the incident. Yokoyama, who is assigned to the Takaishi Police Station Community Affairs Division, was taken into custody at JR Tennoji Station in Osaka. Authorities stated that he had been under the care of a station employee around 4 p.m. when he suddenly became aggressive and slapped a security guard in his sixties across the face. The station employee and security guard managed to subdue Yokoyama until law enforcement arrived.
Police investigations revealed that Yokoyama had finished his shift and was off duty at the time of the incident. Earlier that day, he had attended a welcome and farewell gathering for fellow community affairs employees at noon. It was during this event that he consumed alcohol excessively before disembarking from the train at the station while still heavily intoxicated.
Expressing his disapproval of such behavior by an officer of law enforcement, Inspector General Hironori Tsugawa Hironori declared, “This conduct is unacceptable for a police officer. We will take strict measures based on our investigation findings.”
