British reality star Spencer Matthews has successfully completed his mission of running 30 marathons across the desert in Jordan in 30 consecutive days. The 36-year-old, known for his appearances on “Made in Chelsea” and “Celebrity MasterChef,” documented his “Great Desert Challenge” on social media. On August 27, he took to Instagram to announce the completion of his incredible endurance feat. Matthews revealed that he is now a Guinness World Records holding endurance athlete, being the first and only person to run this many back-to-back marathons in such extreme conditions.
Running over 42.2km or 26.2 miles every single day, Matthews covered a total distance of 1,274.02km (791.64 miles) through some of the world’s toughest terrain with no comfort for recovery. Despite facing temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, he decided to undertake this challenge to raise money for Global’s Make Some Noise charity.
Matthews expressed that it was important for him to support children who have experienced loss since he lost his older brother when he was just ten years old. His brother went missing while descending Mount Everest and was presumed dead at the age of 22.
The funds raised so far amount to £342,508 ($451,555.70) for Global’s Make Some Noise charity based in London which supports small charities across the United Kingdom that aid people with disabilities and children in need.
Matthews’ late brother continues to be an inspiration during physical challenges like this desert run as they had a close bond before his tragic passing.
Starting on July 29 at Petra in Jordan’s southwestern desert at four o’clock in the morning, Matthews shared updates throughout his journey on Instagram and expressed gratitude towards everyone who supported him along the way.
Now that he has completed this extraordinary adventure through the Jordanian desert, Matthews is still processing its impact and expresses heartfelt thanks for all the love and support received from fans throughout this challenge.
