There is a new addition to the big leagues in Philadelphia. The Mets’ 12th-ranked prospect, Luisangel Acuña, has been performing well in Triple-A Syracuse with a batting average of .258, an on-base percentage of .299, and a slugging percentage of .355. He has hit seven home runs and stolen 40 bases in 131 games.
To make room for Acuña, the Mets have optioned outfielder DJ Stewart. This move is not related to Francisco Lindor’s back tightness injury, which the team considers minor and expects him to recover from quickly. However, it does strengthen their bench by providing another middle-infield option alongside Lindor, Jose Iglesias, and Eddy Alvarez.
Acuña has showcased his versatility at Syracuse by playing shortstop, second base, and center field. The Mets acquired him in a trade for Max Scherzer before last year’s Trade Deadline. Although he started the season as their third-ranked prospect and was ranked 66th overall in baseball, his inconsistency at the highest Minor League level caused him to drop on those lists.
Nevertheless, Acuña brings a unique combination of speed and defensive skills that can be valuable for the Mets coming off the bench during this crucial stretch of games.
