LDP’s Hayashi Open to Extralegal Measures in Taiwan Emergency

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, a candidate in the ruling Liberal​ Democratic Party’s upcoming presidential election, has expressed his willingness to ​use extralegal means to rescue⁤ Japanese​ citizens in Taiwan ‌during an emergency if​ he becomes prime minister. Hayashi made this statement during a television program ⁤where LDP presidential candidates were asked about their response under Japan’s national security⁤ legislation if China imposes a maritime blockade around Taiwan.

Economic ⁤security⁣ minister Sanae Takaichi stated that it could be a situation where Japan is allowed to use its⁢ collective self-defense right in a limited manner. Former LDP ⁢Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba mentioned that it would at least be a situation where Japan can provide logistical support to other countries like the United States.

Regarding the issue of Japanese abductees in North Korea, ⁢former Environment⁣ Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized the⁢ importance of ‌communication ⁣with North Korean leader Kim Jong ​Un. He referred to the meetings between their fathers, then Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ⁤and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, in 2002 and 2004 as potential avenues for achieving a breakthrough.
