Tokyo Monorail Co. has introduced a new monorail car painted in cream, light blue, and blue to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its inauguration of service. The monorail, which connects central Tokyo to Haneda Airport, first opened in time for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Initially running for about 13 kilometers between Monorail Hamamatsucho and Haneda stations on the Tokyo Monorail line, it now covers a distance of 17.8 kilometers between Monorail Hamamatsucho and Haneda Airport Terminal 2 stations.
To celebrate this milestone, a six-car monorail train departed from Monorail Hamamatsucho Station on Sunday morning. The train was bid farewell by Tokyo Monorail employees and others who gathered to witness this special occasion. The duration of the special train service period has not yet been determined.
A company director expressed their aspirations for safer transportation as they mark this significant anniversary: “As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we aim to make a fresh start by providing even safer transportation.”
This commemorative monorail car serves as a reminder of the rich history behind Tokyo’s monorail system while also symbolizing progress towards an even more secure future in public transportation.
