Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed that the club considered making a move for Ivan Toney during the summer transfer window. The desire to bring in a new starting striker was no secret, and although they eventually signed Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, Toney was also on their shortlist. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match against Brentford, Postecoglou confirmed that Toney was indeed considered by Spurs before he joined Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia on deadline day. However, the Australian manager stated that Solanke was the player he wanted and that it took the entire summer to secure his signature because he fit the profile they were looking for.
Solanke, who became Tottenham’s most expensive signing of the summer, is yet to score for his new club in three appearances. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City but suffered an ankle injury that kept him out until after the September international break. Since then, Solanke has started in Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal and their 2-1 victory over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup. He is expected to lead the line against Brentford this weekend.
However, Postecoglou also confirmed that Richarlison will be out of action for an extended period due to injury and there is uncertainty surrounding his return date. The manager advised against asking about Richarlison until he provides an update as the player is currently not with the first team.
while Tottenham considered Ivan Toney as a potential signing during the summer transfer window, they ultimately opted for Dominic Solanke as their new starting striker.
