Boar’s Head liverwurst, the controversial cold cut, will no longer be produced, according to an announcement made by the company last Friday. The decision comes as a result of a listeria outbreak that led to a massive product recall. Boar’s Head stated that their investigation revealed that the contamination was caused by a specific production process used only for liverwurst at their Jarratt facility in Virginia. As a result of this discovery, they have decided to permanently discontinue liverwurst.
Liverwurst has fallen out of favor and is considered one of the least popular sandwich options in New York City. In an essay published in April, Robert Sietsema from Eater NY wrote about his quest to find liverwurst sandwiches in the city known for its deli culture. He found that none of the five Manhattan delis he visited had it on their menu, although some older sandwich makers were familiar with it.
Liverwurst is an emulsified sausage made from pork liver and other organs mixed with spices. It was once affordable and commonly used as filling for sandwiches made with rye, pumpernickel or whole wheat bread and dressed with mustard and sometimes raw onions. During World War II, it even caused anger due to rationing.
Despite its decline in popularity, there are still some who enjoy liverwurst sandwiches. However, they often face ridicule for their choice as many people find it unappetizing. Liverwurst lovers remain loyal despite the criticism they receive.
