Cam Thomas, selected with the 27th pick by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2021 NBA Draft, is preparing to start his fourth season in the world’s most popular basketball league. After averaging about 17 minutes per game in his first two seasons, he scored 22.5 points in the last season with 31.4 minutes on the court.
The real test for Cam Thomas will be the NBA season of 2024/2025, during which he will have to prove that he can lead the New York franchise as their main scorer.
With their star Mikal Bridges leaving for the New York Knicks during the summer through a trade, it seems like the Brooklyn Nets have finally decided to start a rebuilding process, officially declaring an end to their project for a championship ring that began several seasons ago with Durant-Harden-Irving trio. The 2023/2024 season ended with a record of 32 wins and 50 losses, and there is a feeling that this year will also be characterized by a transition phase.
For Thomas, however, it won’t be a transition year at all. Called upon to carry the weight of the team’s offense, this former LSU Tigers guard has already shown himself to be an excellent scorer at various levels as evidenced by his solid three-point shooting percentage of 36.4% and decent but improvable field goal percentage of 44.2%.
Although playmaking and passing are not his strongest qualities, last year’s statistics showed an increase in assists per game of over 50% compared to previous seasons. With more and more balls in his hands, he could also improve in this aspect thanks to good shooters like Bojan Bogdanovic and effective big men like Nic Claxton ready to receive his passes.
The talent is undeniable; opportunities will be plentiful; confidence is at its peak – now it’s up to this Japanese-born player to prove his worth. We believe in him.
