Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is set to undergo surgery for a sternoclavicular injury, potentially sidelining him for the rest of the season, according to coach Andy Reid. Reid stated that Brown’s recovery timeline will likely be measured in months rather than weeks. The severity of this particular injury is not well-documented, so the team will have to wait and see how long it takes for Brown to heal. The surgery will take place on Monday in Vail, Colorado.
Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs’ vice president for sports medicine and performance, confirmed that Brown would undergo surgery for the shoulder joint injury. As a result, he will be placed on injured reserve and miss at least the next four games. Despite his disappointment and frustration with needing surgery, Brown expressed his faith in God and his belief that this setback is just a temporary obstacle.
Brown sustained the injury during the first play of the Chiefs’ preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 10. Although he did not participate in their season-opening victory over the Baltimore Ravens on September 5, there was hope that he could return in time for their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, further examination revealed that there had been movement in his bone since his last MRI three weeks prior. After consulting with multiple physicians across the country, it was determined that playing without undergoing surgery would be too risky.
With Brown out of commission indefinitely, the Chiefs now have six wide receivers remaining on their active roster. Rashee Rice emerged as their leading receiver against Baltimore with seven catches for 103 yards. Rookie Xavier Worthy also made an impact by scoring two touchdowns.
Reid expressed confidence in their current receiving corps and stated that they do not feel compelled to bring in another player at this time. Brown joined Kansas City as a free agent during this past offseason after spending five seasons split between stints with both Ravens and Cardinals franchises.
In 2021 with Baltimore, he had an impressive season with 91 receptions for 1,008 yards while last year with Arizona he caught 51 passes for 574 yards.
