Daiwa House Industry Co. has stepped in to provide temporary housing for those affected by a devastating wildfire that swept through Maui, Hawaii in August 2023. The company has already completed some of the units, with occupancy already underway, and plans to finish all 50 units by the end of September.
The temporary housing units come in three different sizes, ranging from 33 square meters to 67 square meters. They are being constructed by a U.S. construction company as part of a project led by an asset management company headed by Tadashi Yanai, chairman and president of Fast Retailing Co., which includes popular fashion brand UNIQLO.
This marks the first time that Daiwa House Group has provided such housing outside of Japan. In the past, they have supplied over 28,000 temporary housing units following major earthquakes like the Great Hanshin Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The wildfires on Maui caused extensive damage to more than 2,000 buildings. Hawaii Governor Josh Green expressed his gratitude for Daiwa House’s assistance in ensuring that residents can continue living on their native land.
With their expertise in providing temporary housing solutions during times of crisis, Daiwa House Industry Co.’s contribution will undoubtedly help ease some of the burden faced by those who lost their homes in this tragic event.
