Former Vice President Dick Cheney has announced his endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the presidential election. Cheney, who served as Republican vice president under the George W. Bush administration, stated that he believes it is our duty as citizens to prioritize country over partisanship and defend the Constitution. He expressed criticism towards former President Donald Trump for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election, echoing comments he made in 2022 when endorsing his daughter Liz Cheney in her unsuccessful House reelection bid.
Liz Cheney, who spearheaded the congressional investigation into Trump’s actions leading up to and during the January 6th Capitol protest, also recently announced her support for Harris. The younger Cheney emphasized her commitment to conservatism and constitutional values as reasons for backing Harris.
The endorsement from Dick Cheney was welcomed by the Harris campaign, with campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon expressing gratitude for his courage to prioritize country over party.
Dick Cheney, now 83 years old and dealing with heart issues since his 40s, has made few public appearances in recent years. In response to his endorsement of Harris, Trump took to Truth Social (his social media platform) criticizing Cheney’s involvement in what he called “Endless Nonsensical Wars” initiated by their administration.
Trump also mentioned that while serving as vice president under Bush, Dick Cheney was unable to secure a pardon for former Bush adviser Scooter Libby. However, Trump himself granted Libby a full pardon in 2018 after he was convicted in 2007 as part of an investigation into leaking a CIA officer’s identity.
