WFAN host Evan Roberts attended the New York Mets’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the NLCS at Citizen Bank Park. However, his experience with Philly fans was far from pleasant. Roberts described them as “disgusting” and “awful human beings.” He even expressed pain at the thought of them celebrating a championship.
Although he did not specify what exactly the Phillies fans did to provoke such strong feelings, their behavior during the game made Roberts contemplate something unthinkable for him: rooting for the Yankees in a World Series matchup against the Phillies.
Roberts admitted that attending the game with his family made him question his decision as soon as the Mets took an early 3-0 lead. He even feared for their safety if they were to leave after a Mets victory. In fact, he believed that a Phillies win would have been more beneficial in terms of ensuring their safe exit from Citizen Bank Park.
Ultimately, Nick Castellanos drove in a walk-off run in the bottom of the 9th inning, resulting in a 7-6 victory for Philadelphia and tying up the series at one apiece. It remains unclear whether this outcome was worse or better than what Roberts had anticipated if his team had won.
Evan Roberts felt that Phillies fans lived up to his expectations, both positively and negatively. He acknowledged that they were everything he expected them to be and even compared their behavior unfavorably to previous experiences with Nets/Sixers playoff games.
It is unlikely that this encounter will lead to any rational or productive dialogue between Mets and Phillies fans.
