One of the first Ghostface killers in the Scream franchise was Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard. Stu and his best friend Billy Loomis committed horrific attacks on teenagers in Woodsboro. Both murderers appeared to be killed by the end of the first Scream film. However, Matthew Lillard made a cameo appearance in Scream 2, which has fueled rumors of a possible return for Stu Macher.
In Scream 2, Lillard’s character is seen in the background of a sorority party scene. He is out of focus and wearing plain white and blue shirts, making it easy to miss him unless you’re specifically looking for him. There has been speculation about whether this cameo was just for nostalgia or if it hints at Stu’s return.
Originally, Stu was supposed to be the mastermind behind the Ghostface killings from behind bars in Scream 3. However, this plan was scrapped and Roman became the killer instead. Matthew Lillard confirmed that he had signed on for three movies but only appeared prominently in the first film.
In Scream 5, there are references to Stu Macher that further fuel theories about his possible return. A youtube video suggested that “the real Stu Macher” may have survived, adding more intrigue to his character’s fate.
Matthew Lillard also lent his voice to another cameo during a memorial scene for Wes Craven in Scream 5. Despite not playing a major role as Stu anymore, he continues to pay tribute to his roots by appearing in small roles within the franchise.
while there is no confirmation yet about whether or not Stu will make a comeback in future films, these cameos and references keep fans speculating about his potential return.
