FEMA Director dismisses claims on Helene response as unhelpful

The director of the Federal Emergency ‌Management Agency (FEMA), Deanne Criswell, has responded to claims about the agency’s⁣ funding in ‍the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. Criswell stated that it is unfortunate that politics are being prioritized‍ over ‍helping ⁣people, which goes against FEMA’s purpose. She emphasized that⁢ allegations suggesting FEMA lacks funding due to support for illegal ‌immigrants have⁣ a significant impact on recovery efforts and demoralize first responders. Criswell criticized such statements as unhelpful.

Some Republicans⁤ have criticized FEMA’s response in North Carolina and referenced recent comments made by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about FEMA running ⁢out ‌of funds. Mayorkas clarified that while there are still funds available for immediate needs after Helene, ⁢relying on ⁢continuing resolutions is not ‍a stable source of supply.

FEMA spokeswoman Jaclyn Rothenberg confirmed that Criswell has full⁤ authority to spend according to the President’s budget but acknowledged the need for vigilance during hurricane season. Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, have accused FEMA of diverting funds‍ to assist illegal immigrants. However, Criswell dismissed these ⁣claims as ridiculous and false without providing further details.

While some‍ GOP lawmakers and social media commentators highlighted previous announcements by FEMA regarding funding for migrants in the United States, Criswell did not address this issue during her interview with ABC News.

Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina rejected claims that his state was not receiving sufficient federal resources following Helene’s impact. He expressed confidence ‍in Congress approving additional funding soon.

Hurricane Helene made landfall on September 26 as a Category‍ 4 hurricane, causing extensive damage across Florida before moving northward. The death toll currently stands at 225 with potential for further ‌increase as more individuals remain unaccounted for or missing.

Criswell⁢ also mentioned preparations for Hurricane Milton, another storm system expected to hit western Florida later this week. She has been in communication with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis regarding potential impacts from this upcoming storm.
