The Sanriku Fireworks Competition in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, showcased a stunning display of approximately 15,000 fireworks on Sunday. This event was initiated by local volunteers three years ago as an effort to revive the city after it was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The competition attracted a record-breaking number of over 15,000 visitors this year, according to the organizer. Seven fireworks manufacturers from different parts of Japan participated in launching their spectacular creations. A 57-year-old office worker residing in the city expressed delight at witnessing the lively atmosphere and remarked that these fireworks are gradually becoming an autumn tradition for locals.
