The Finance Ministry announced on Friday that it will release gold and silver coins to commemorate the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. The gold coins, with a denomination of ¥10,000, will be sold at a record price of ¥268,000 each. Similarly, the silver coins, with a denomination of ¥1,000, will be sold at a record price of ¥15,200 each. The ministry attributed these high prices to the increasing value of gold and silver.
The gold coins will be made from pure gold and weigh 15.6 grams each. They will feature designs of the Japan Pavilion and the official character of the expo, Myaku-Myaku. On the other hand, the silver coins will showcase Myaku-Myaku and a rainbow.
An innovative technology will be used for the silver coins that allows three-dimensional letters spelling “EXPO” to appear when exposed to LED lighting. This technology is being used for coins for the first time in history.
The ministry plans to issue 30,000 gold coins and 50,000 silver coins in total. Applications for purchasing these commemorative coins can be submitted at the Japan Mint for approximately three weeks starting from March 6 next year. Shipments are expected to begin in late August of that same year.
In addition to individual coin sales, there will also be an option to purchase sets featuring all five types of commemorative coins related to the exposition.
