The Cleveland Guardians came out strong in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, scoring five runs in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers. The Guardians created a high-intensity atmosphere during their simulated games leading up to this matchup, with piped-in crowd music and players taunting each other. Trade Deadline acquisition Lane Thomas hit a three-run home run to contribute to the explosive start. Tigers opener Tyler Holton was pulled from the game after facing just four hitters without recording an out, joining a short list of pitchers who have had similar postseason struggles. Steven Kwan set the tone for Cleveland with a double off Holton on the second pitch of the game. The Guardians capitalized on an error by Detroit’s third baseman and continued to score runs until recording their first out in the seventh batter. This is only the second time in postseason history that Cleveland has scored five runs in the first inning, with their previous occurrence resulting in a loss but eventual series win back in 1997 against the Yankees.
