Japanese company Hitachi has announced a collaboration with US chip giant Nvidia to improve railway maintenance using an AI-based system. The move is part of Hitachi’s efforts to expand its railway business to around ¥1tn ($9.2bn) by fiscal 2024. The new system, showcased at the InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin, uses sensors and cameras on trains to collect data on vehicle vibrations, component temperature and images of the railroad. The Edge AI processes this data onboard the train, eliminating the need for transmission to a data centre and allowing for instant analysis of any issues with the train or track during operations. Hitachi plans to strengthen its sales in Europe by appealing that the system will lead to cost reduction as well as ensuring safety.
