An internship program has been launched at a museum in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. The museum aims to highlight the historical story of the Utoro area, which has long been associated with unfair treatment against the ethnic Korean population.
The purpose of this internship is to raise awareness among the general public about the experiences and hardships faced by Koreans living in Utoro, with the goal of promoting understanding. Through this program, interns have the opportunity to gain knowledge and offer observations about the history and culture of this specific town.
The museum intends to create a platform for communication and debate through this project, fostering inclusiveness and combating discrimination. The interns play a crucial role in facilitating these discussions by interacting with guests and addressing their questions about Utoro’s historical past.
Mr. Tanaka, the museum’s director, expressed his enthusiasm for how this internship can benefit both guests and interns. He stated that “this internship is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn about the struggles endured by the Korean population in Utoro. Encouraging honest communication helps us overcome barriers and strengthen understanding between people.”
The internship program has received support from individuals dedicated to promoting social peace and diversity. Local community leader Ms. Yamada emphasized the importance of such programs, stating that “eliminating stereotypes relies on educating the public about discrimination backgrounds. I believe this internship will contribute to creating a more welcoming society.”
To ensure a comprehensive educational experience, the program offers a complete curriculum. Interns participate in guided museum visits, attend lectures on prejudice history, engage in conversations with subject-matter experts, and may also have access to seminars provided by the museum.
Both students and young professionals are eager to contribute to social change through this internship while gaining valuable insights. Recently graduated Ms. Suzuki shared her motivation for applying: “I believe this internship will enhance my awareness of issues faced by minority populations while providing personal growth opportunities as well as influence within society.”
