The Italian Navy’s aircraft carrier Cavour and frigate Alpino have made their first port call in Japan, arriving at the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture on Thursday. The purpose of this visit is to conduct joint training exercises with the MSDF and enhance cooperation in response to China’s increasing maritime presence.
The Cavour, which measures approximately 240 meters long, is equipped with advanced aircraft such as the F-35B and AV-8B Harrier II Plus. It embarked on its journey from Taranto, Italy on June 1 and traveled through the Indian Ocean before engaging in joint drills with the U.S. and Australian navies in the Pacific Ocean.
This port call follows a series of visits by ships from Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Germany earlier this month. Italy now becomes the fifth country to dock its ships at the Yokosuka base.
During their stay until August 27th, both Italian vessels will participate in joint training exercises alongside MSDF forces. These exercises aim to strengthen interoperability between naval forces and improve coordination for potential future operations.
China’s growing maritime presence has raised concerns among regional countries about maintaining stability and security in international waters. Through these joint training exercises with Italy, Japan aims to enhance its defense capabilities while fostering closer ties with international partners.
The arrival of Italian naval vessels marks another step towards strengthening cooperation among like-minded nations that share common interests in maintaining peace and stability within the Indo-Pacific region.
