Jacoby Brissett discusses benching challenges

Mayo, who had⁣ been a strong supporter of Brissett as the⁢ starting quarterback since ‌training camp began, announced on Wednesday that it ⁤was time to make ‍the⁤ switch to Maye, ‌the third overall pick in‌ the 2024 NFL Draft.

“He was a warrior,” Mayo said of Brissett, who had been⁢ sacked 17 times in the first five games. “As you guys know, he’s ⁢taken a lot of⁤ hits and just kept getting up.”

“I think now, Drake gives us the best chance to win now ‌and going forward. He’s been getting better every single week,” Mayo added.

Brissett did not⁢ speak⁢ with the media on Wednesday but spoke quietly for about five minutes ⁣on Thursday.

“I told somebody this the other day:⁢ I’ve been through‌ harder times in my life,” ⁢Brissett said. “I’m sure this‌ won’t be the ⁣last time I go through something hard. I’ll be all right.”

The 31-year-old Brissett signed a one-year deal with New England in the offseason and was named ⁣as their ‍starter by Mayo at training camp. However,⁤ with a 1-4 start to their⁣ season and struggling offensive performance, including being near or ⁤at the bottom of major offensive categories like points per game and passing yards per game, changes needed to be made.

Brissett is not solely responsible for these offensive⁢ struggles though. The team’s ineffective line and health issues with some skill-position players have also contributed to their problems.

Despite ‌being replaced ‍by Maye as starter, Brissett still has support from his teammates‌ and ⁢coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt‍ acknowledged that it ⁢was a difficult decision given his relationship with Brissett but emphasized that they wanted someone like him in their organization.

“Jacoby’s the ultimate pro,” said veteran ⁢defensive tackle Davon Godchaux. “He’s⁢ a leader… He knows how to deal with this.”

Maye ‌also expressed his admiration for ⁣Brissett’s professionalism⁤ and mentorship qualities.

Brissett ‍remains positive about his situation and is ⁢excited for ⁢Maye’s opportunity as⁤ well.

Now eight years ⁣after making his first NFL start against Houston in 2016 where he led New England to victory, it will be Maye⁢ taking over against an ⁤aggressive Houston defense. As for what lies ahead for him this week‍ and throughout this ‍season?⁢ Only time will tell.
