“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” Star Jenna Ortega Opposes Gender-Swapping Male Characters in Films
Jenna Ortega, breakout star of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” has expressed her strong opposition to the gender-flipping of lead male characters in movies like James Bond or “Edward Scissorhands.” In an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, Ortega praised the increase in female leads but emphasized the importance of creating original female characters instead of spinoffs. When asked if she would consider playing Edith Scissorhands in a remake, Ortega called for more female-led franchises and highlighted the mystery and sensitivity of iconic characters like Edward.
Director Tim Burton, known for films such as “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands,” was mentioned in relation to these gender-swapping discussions. However, no specific plans or requests were mentioned regarding Ortega’s involvement.
The idea of a female James Bond has been a topic of discussion over the years. According to author Steven Jay Rubin, Susan Hayward was originally considered for the role back in the 1950s. However, it ultimately did not come to fruition. The late Sean Connery was eventually cast as James Bond in 1962’s “Dr. No” and subsequent sequels.
Barbara Broccoli, producer of the James Bond franchise, stated that Agent 007 will continue to be portrayed by male actors but acknowledged that a new actor will take on the role after Daniel Craig’s departure following ”No Time to Die.” Broccoli emphasized her belief in creating original roles specifically tailored for women rather than having women play men’s roles.
Iola Nguyen, an award-winning writer and director, supports both Ortega and Broccoli’s perspectives on creating new and original female characters rather than relying on gender-swapped versions of existing male roles. Nguyen believes true empowerment comes from providing real representation for women without constantly comparing them to male counterparts.
In “BeetleJuice Beetlejuice,” Jenna Ortega portrays Astrid Deetz—a teenager navigating life after her grandfather’s death while her mother prepares to remarry. The story takes a supernatural turn when Astrid accidentally summons a demon who threatens her life. As she faces difficult choices alongside her mother Lydia Deetz (played by Winona Ryder), they encounter iconic character Beetlejuice (played by Michael Keaton) who offers them an opportunity to return from the afterlife.
Jenna Ortega advocates for more originality when it comes to female-led franchises while respecting established male characters like James Bond or Edward Scissorhands as unique entities with their own appeal.
