John Legend and Chrissy Teigen recently opened up about their experience navigating the challenges of parenting, particularly after their son’s diabetes diagnosis. In an interview with People magazine, Legend praised Teigen for being the perfect partner in facing these difficulties together.
The couple first discovered that their 6-year-old son, Miles, had Type 1 diabetes during summer camp. It started when a stomach bug spread among the children at camp, including Miles. Concerned about his health, they took him to the emergency room where his blood sugar was checked. After further tests, it was confirmed that he had Type 1 diabetes.
Legend shared that while the diagnosis came as a shock to their family, Teigen took a proactive approach in educating herself about this chronic condition and how to support their son. He described himself as optimistic and practical, believing that they could handle this new challenge with the help of advice and support from others.
Type 1 diabetes affects the body’s immune system and prevents the pancreas from producing insulin—a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. It commonly develops in children, teenagers, and young adults but can occur at any age. Although there is no cure for this disease yet, treatment options focus on managing blood sugar through insulin shots as well as dietary and lifestyle changes.
With three other children—daughters Luna (8) and Esti (19 months), and son Wren (14 months)—the couple has shifted their attention towards meeting Miles’s medical needs and accommodating his dietary restrictions. As his condition progresses over time, they will need to closely monitor his carbohydrate intake and administer insulin accordingly.
Legend emphasized how important it is for them to lean on each other during this journey. He believes that having Teigen by his side strengthens them as a team.
Teigen also shared her gratitude for those who reached out with words of encouragement after noticing a glucose monitor on Miles’s arm in a photo taken during the Paris Olympics. She expressed her appreciation for the kindness shown by her online community during such challenging times.
As John Legend continues promoting his new family album “My Favorite Dream,” he remains focused on supporting Miles through his Type 1 diabetes journey alongside Chrissy Teigen—their unwavering partnership serving as an invaluable source of strength.
