GOP Senators Propose Legislation to Penalize States for Excluding Trump from Presidential Ballot

Republican Senators Respond to Attempts to Disqualify Trump from State Ballots

In response to the left’s efforts to remove former President Trump from state ballots, Republican senators in the U.S. are taking action. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has introduced a bill that aims to restrict federal funds for states that attempt to disqualify Trump from the 2024 ballot. This move has garnered support from various GOP members, including Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who is not typically associated with conservative viewpoints.

According to a report by Townhall, Republican senators are planning retaliation against states that seek to disqualify Trump from the 2024 ballot. Maine became the second state to remove Trump from its ballot, prompting a group of lawmakers to introduce legislation that would penalize such actions by states. “New law… If any state in our Union blocks the official nominee of a major political party from the Presidential ballot, their electoral slate will not be counted by Congress on the following January 6th,” Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) stated, emphasizing the consequences of such actions by states. Senator Collins also expressed support for holding states accountable if they infringe upon constitutional rights.

Senator Thom Tillis announced his drafting of a bill that would limit federal funds for states that disqualify candidates from the ballot under the 14th Amendment. He intends to introduce this bill as soon as Congress reconvenes. In a tweet, Senator Collins emphasized the importance of Maine voters having the right to decide the outcome of elections. She denounced the decision by the Secretary of State to remove Trump from the ballot, arguing that it deprived thousands of Mainers the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.

Furthermore, Senator Tillis expressed his outrage at the actions of Maine’s Democrat Secretary of State for disqualifying Trump from the ballot. He highlighted the need to introduce the Constitutional Election Integrity Act to prevent partisan officials from abusing their power and ensure fair elections. It is evident that Republicans are taking these threats seriously and are actively fighting back. There is widespread support for Senator Tillis’ efforts, indicating that the GOP is committed to safeguarding the integrity of elections and protecting the rights of voters.
