A symposium was held at Keio University in Tokyo to explore the concept of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. The event marked the establishment of the Keio University X Dignity Center, where researchers from various disciplines will study how AI impacts human dignity. In today’s digital space, there is a growing “attention economy” that relies on extreme information to capture people’s attention. With AI generating vast amounts of data and individuals being exposed to biased information, there is a risk of distorted perceptions. Professor Tatsuhiko Yamamoto, co-representative of the center, emphasized that their research will focus on defining and realizing human dignity amidst rapid advancements in AI. The center aims to achieve this through interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-disciplinary research. Additionally, they value partnerships with industry and civil society, as evidenced by their advisory board consisting of corporate representatives. Toshikazu Yamaguchi, Chairman of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings and head of the advisory board, expressed his expectations for the center’s activities. He highlighted how AI development is constantly evolving at an unprecedented pace every three months, placing humanity in uncharted territory.
