Takayuki Kobayashi, the former economic security minister, is considering a bid for the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). An announcement regarding his decision is expected as early as Monday. Another contender in the race is Taro Kono, who currently serves as the digital minister. In order to increase his chances of success, Kobayashi aims to secure support from 20 LDP lawmakers. However, despite being a member of a faction within the LDP led by Toshihiro Nikai, Kobayashi does not have their backing. On the other hand, Kono enjoys support from Taro Aso, Vice President of LDP and is likely to receive recommendations from 20 members belonging to Aso’s group.
Kobayashi’s campaign has garnered assistance from various members within the LDP. Notably, both Tatsuo Fukuda and Keitaro Ono have held significant positions in politics before. Interestingly enough, both Kobayashi and Fukuda embarked on their political careers simultaneously.
Yoshimasa Hayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary at present time has expressed his desire to run for president during discussions with LDP leaders. Although he belongs to a faction led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida; however,Kishida intends to dissolve this group. Upon learning that Kishida does not plan on seeking re-election,Hayashi made up his mind about running.
Yoko Kamikawa, the Foreign Minister,is also affiliated with Kishida’s faction and seeks 20 recommendations in order to enter into contention for presidency.Katsunobu Kato,a former Chief Cabinet Secretary,is also interested in participating in this election and has taken steps towards doing so.Kato belongs to a group headed by Toshimitsu Motegi, and will be competing against Motegi himself who also intends on running for president.
