Scream star Matthew Lillard has ventured into the Tequila market with the introduction of a new range of agave spirits designed for horror enthusiasts. Lillard, known for his roles in films like Scooby-Doo and Five Nights at Freddy’s, has created a line called Macabre Spirits under his company Find Familiar Spirits. Teaming up with Blue Run Spirits co-founder Tim Sparapani and screenwriter Justin Ware, Lillard launched Find Familiar Spirits in October 2023 with their fantasy-inspired Quest’s End Whiskey.
Now, Find Familiar is expanding into the agave spirits category by releasing a reposado Tequila as the first offering in their Macabre Spirits range. This small-batch additive-free Tequila hails from Jalisco and boasts notes of cooked agave, caramelized sugars, buttery caramel, slight smoke, white pepper on the nose; while on the palate it brings forth flavors of agave, minerality, black pepper, and burnt sugar.
Similar to their Quest’s End range, each release in the Macabre Spirits line will come packaged in a custom box accompanied by an original story. The inaugural release will include a book titled Rare Fine & Limited written by renowned horror writer Mike Flanagan known for works such as The Fall of the House of Usher and The Haunting of Hill House. The cover art for this book was created by Mia Bergeron who is recognized for her use of dramatic lighting effects.
Lillard expressed his excitement about Macabre Spirits stating that it combines two things he loves: wicked horror stories and delicious Tequila. Inspired by Danse Macabre - an allegory from medieval times featuring dancing skeletal figures in graveyards - Macabre Spirits embraces this theme with its motto “Tempus Saltandi” meaning ”time to dance” translated from Latin. The bottle design features a fiddle-playing skeletal figure inspired by famous macabre artwork.
Each new release under Macabre Spirits will be carefully selected to accompany an original story written by acclaimed horror writers along with unique oil-painted artwork. A full lineup of releases is planned for 2025.
