O’Toole Raises Concerns of Interference by Chinese Woman

Former Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole testified before the Foreign Interference⁤ Commission, revealing a suspected attempt at influence ‌involving a “flirtatious” Chinese woman. O’Toole⁢ described being approached by this woman, whom he referred to as a “young ethnic Chinese woman,” at an event in either 2018 or 2019, as well as on other occasions.

According to ⁣the summary of⁣ his testimony, O’Toole found the woman’s‍ behavior unprofessional ‌and relentless in her attempts to obtain his phone number. He felt bothered and uncomfortable by her actions and later reflected on‌ the incident, believing it may have ⁢been an overt ⁢attempt to gain his influence.

The Chinese Communist Party is known for employing sexual seduction tactics, commonly referred to as ‌”honey pots,” in order to ‌exert foreign influence. These tactics involve Chinese agents fostering romantic relationships with influential individuals with the aim of gathering sensitive information. Such tactics are not limited⁣ to Canada and have been observed in other countries as well.

O’Toole also expressed concern about international students who⁣ offered their assistance during his campaign. He found ⁤it strange that these students would take such a keen ‍interest in domestic politics and volunteer for an internal party leadership⁤ race. While acknowledging that they may have genuinely wanted to help, O’Toole noted that their role as volunteers would have given them access to ⁤his campaign.

Highlighting these incidents, ⁣O’Toole emphasized the limited ability of political parties to properly screen or vet⁣ volunteers, leaving them⁣ vulnerable to potential ‌foreign interference.

During his testimony on September 18th, O’Toole ‌raised additional concerns‌ regarding‌ China’s potential foreign interference in⁢ Canada. He mentioned considering expelling a senator from his caucus ⁣due to⁤ their advocacy for a Chinese state-owned company in Ontario and extensive⁣ sponsored travel received from China. However, he ultimately decided against ‌expulsion out of fear of being accused of racism.‌ Instead,‍ he requested that the party leader engage in⁢ a serious conversation with⁤ the senator about appropriate ⁣conduct.
