Patti Scialfa, wife and bandmate of Bruce Springsteen, has revealed that she has been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The 71-year-old guitarist disclosed her diagnosis in a documentary about the E Street Band that premiered on Sunday. Scialfa explained that her condition has forced her to limit her touring with the band due to its impact on her immune system. Despite this setback, she expressed gratitude for being able to occasionally join the band on stage and perform a few songs. A spokesperson for Scialfa declined to provide further details about her current treatment or condition. Notably, she was absent from the film’s premiere in Toronto.
Scialfa joined the E Street Band in 1984 and married Springsteen in 1991. Her contributions were recognized when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. In addition to her work with the band, Scialfa has also pursued a solo career.
Springsteen himself faced health challenges over the past couple of years, having had to postpone tour dates due to peptic ulcer disease and vocal issues. However, he is set to perform at a music festival in Asbury Park on September 15th – an event closely associated with his music.
The revelation of Scialfa’s battle with multiple myeloma adds another layer of complexity for both herself and Springsteen as they navigate their musical careers while prioritizing their health concerns.
