U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has condemned Hamas for the killing of six hostages in Gaza, describing it as a vicious act committed by the terrorist group. Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on September 1st after the bodies of the hostages were discovered in an underground tunnel in Gaza’s Rafah area. One of the victims was Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen.
During their conversation, Austin expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the slain hostages and also to the families of three Israeli police officers who were killed in a separate terrorist attack in the West Bank on the same day. He expressed outrage at what he called a “vicious, illegal, and immoral execution” by Hamas and voiced concerns about escalating tensions in Gaza.
Austin reaffirmed America’s commitment to reaching an agreement that would secure the release of other hostages still held by Hamas since their attack on Israel last year. Gallant echoed this commitment and emphasized the important role played by the United States in negotiations. He also stated that Israel remains determined to eliminate Hamas leadership and assets within Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described how these six hostages were brutally murdered before their bodies were found in an underground tunnel. The victims have been identified as Ori Danino, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, and Goldberg-Polin. Their bodies have been returned to Israel for burial.
President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow over these tragic deaths and vowed to continue working towards securing freedom for remaining hostages held captive in Gaza. Biden highlighted Goldberg-Polin’s bravery during a previous attack where he lost his arm while helping others before being kidnapped by Hamas.
The IDF believes there are still 101 hostages being held captive in Gaza and has pledged not to stop its military operation until every hostage is brought home safely.
Protests have erupted across Israel following news of these deaths as demonstrators blame President Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for failing to secure a hostage deal with Hamas.
Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya revealed that they killed these hostages because Netanyahu refused their demands regarding control over certain corridors during ceasefire negotiations.
Negotiations remain ongoing as both sides seek resolution while grappling with this tragic loss.
