Raphael Varane, the 31-year-old World Cup winner, has announced his retirement from football. Varane recently joined Serie A side Como after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer. However, injuries have plagued the latter part of his career, leading him to make the decision to retire. He shared the news on Instagram, stating that he is proud of his accomplishments and grateful for the special moments and memories he has experienced throughout his career.
Varane expressed that he wants to go out strong and not just hold on to the game. He believes it takes courage to listen to one’s heart and instincts. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned that he has fallen and risen many times but now feels it’s time to hang up his boots after winning a trophy at Wembley.
The defender emphasized how much he loved fighting for himself, his clubs, country, teammates, and supporters throughout his career with Lens, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the national team. He described playing at the highest level as a thrilling experience that tests both body and mind.
Varane concluded by expressing no regrets about his career choices. He feels proud of sticking to his principles of sincerity and leaving every place better than when he found it. While a new life begins off the pitch for him now with Como FC in Italy’s Serie A league without using boots or shin pads.
