Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away on Thursday, September 5th, according to a spokesperson for the Fulton County Medical Examiner. The statement provided to Billboard mentioned that the medical examiner was notified of Lamar’s death by Grady Memorial Hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, September 6th.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office initially declined to confirm or deny any information about Lamar when contacted by The Epoch Times. However, they later confirmed the news after being cited by the Associated Press.
Rich Homie Quan gained recognition in the hip-hop scene in the mid-2010s with his popular song “Type of Way” in 2013, which reached number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another hit song from him was “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015, peaking at number 26 on the same chart.
In 2018, Quan released his only studio album titled “Rich as in Spirit,” featuring a collaboration with rapper Rick Ross.
During a hiatus in 2022 due to ongoing litigation with an independent label, Quan expressed his intention to make a comeback. He also found himself involved in a feud with fellow rapper Young Thug during this time. Young Thug faced charges related to Georgia’s RICO Act and alleged involvement in a criminal street gang. Despite their differences at that time, Quan expressed openness to having a conversation with Young Thug and voiced concerns about rappers being targeted by law enforcement.
Following news of Rich Homie Quan’s passing, tributes poured in on social media platforms. Rapper 2 Chainz shared an Instagram post revealing that he had recently spoken with Quan about collaborating on a music video and expressed prayers for him and his family.
