Southampton vs Man Utd: Preview, Predictions, and Lineups

Manchester United will be returning from the September⁣ international break with a challenging match⁢ against‌ Southampton in the Premier League. Currently sitting 14th in the league table after three matches, Manchester United’s season has been off to a⁤ rocky start. They secured a late victory against Fulham on the opening day, but suffered a devastating⁤ defeat at Brighton and were humiliated by bitter rivals Liverpool in their most recent match.

On paper, a trip to Southampton should not pose too much ‍difficulty for⁤ Manchester United. The newly-promoted Saints have lost all three of their league matches so far and have only managed to score one goal, which came in the 94th minute of their recent 3-1 defeat against⁣ Brentford.

However, it’s worth noting that Southampton has shown ‍improvement since their infamous 9-0 loss to‍ Manchester United in February 2021. In fact, they ⁣have drawn three of their last four ‌meetings‌ with⁢ the Red Devils and have picked up draws in eight of their last 11 encounters with them.

As for team news, there is a chance that Ross Stewart and Kamaldeen Sulemana could be named in Southampton’s squad for Saturday’s clash after being close to full fitness prior to the international break. However, Gavin Bazunu is ⁣still⁢ missing and unlikely ⁢to return until 2025.

For Manchester United, ⁢Luke⁤ Shaw and⁢ Rasmus Hojlund are nearing full fitness but may not be ready for this weekend’s⁢ match.⁤ Leny Yoro, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, ⁣and Mason Mount⁣ are still sidelined with various fitness concerns. On a positive note though, ⁢summer signing Manuel Ugarte could make his debut as he‌ was not registered in ⁣time to‍ play against Liverpool.

In terms of predictions for the match itself, despite Manchester United’s recent struggles and defensive issues faced by Southampton this season so far; it is⁣ expected that Manchester United should have little trouble dispatching Russell Martin’s side who are yet to ‍earn ⁤any‌ Premier ⁤League points this season.
