Traffic in Tokyo will be limited on Wednesday as the Metropolitan Police Department carries out a large-scale disaster drill in preparation for a potential earthquake. Commuters have been advised to take alternative routes to avoid expected traffic congestion, particularly on major roads.
At 10:15 a.m., inbound traffic to central Tokyo will be temporarily halted at 21 major intersections along Ring Road No. 7 for approximately 10 minutes. Additionally, around the same time, a total of 68 intersections on national highways such as Route 20 and Route 246 will also experience temporary closures.
For more information regarding the specific restrictions, individuals can visit the MPD’s website.
Originally scheduled for September 1st to coincide with Disaster Prevention Day, the drill was postponed due to Typhoon Shanshan.
