Ancelotti outlines Tchouameni’s role in addressing Real Madrid’s injury crisis

Carlo Ancelotti believes that Aurelien Tchouameni has the potential to become a great center-back after the midfielder was pulled into defense during Real Madrid’s recent 1-0 victory over Alaves. The French international was brought off the bench to partner with Antonio Rudiger in the backline after Nacho Fernandez received a red card. Tchouameni’s presence helped keep Alaves at bay, and Lucas Vazquez eventually secured the win with a 91st-minute goal.

With Eder Militao sidelined since August and David Alaba recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Ancelotti is facing a shortage of options in central defense. Additionally, key first-team players such as Vinicius Junior, Thibaut Courtois, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Carvajal, Arda Guler, and Ferland Mendy are currently unavailable.

Ancelotti addressed reporters after the match, praising Tchouameni’s adaptability, stating: “Tchouameni will get angry for this, but he’s amazing as a central defender. He is lucky he can play as midfielder and as defender. He has all the qualities to be a top centre-back.”

Ancelotti had previously mentioned that the former Monaco star was a viable option to play in defense if needed. He remarked before the game, “Tchouameni is the first option at centre-back. It’s not what we think of him, but in this moment of emergency, he can play there.”

The 23-year-old showcased his abilities on the pitch, completing 100% of his 30 passes following his introduction in the 55th minute for Luka Modric. He also contributed a block and a clearance during his appearance off the bench.

On the attacking front, Madrid relied on the likes of Brahim Diaz, Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham, but they struggled to register shots on target. The winning goal eventually came from Lucas Vazquez, who headed in Toni Kroos’ corner.

Following the victory, Real Madrid has ascended to the top of La Liga, leading Girona on goal difference and holding a seven-point advantage over reigning champions Barcelona. Their next match is scheduled for Wednesday, 3rd January, when they will host 14th-placed Mallorca at the Bernabeu.
