Mohamed Salah compares current Liverpool squad to 2019/20 title winners

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has compared the current Reds squad to the Premier League-winning squad of 2019/20 after scoring his 200th goal for the club in a comeback victory against Crystal Palace.

The Egyptian forward made the comparison after Liverpool’s win sent them to the top of the table for the first time since September 2021, following Arsenal’s defeat to Aston Villa, which reduced the gap between the top three teams to just two points.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Salah praised the team’s fighting mentality, saying, “Just keep fighting until the end. We did it this game, last game and the game before. It’s something positive we can take from that.”

With six or seven new players in the starting lineup, Salah emphasized the need to give them advice and pointed out the similarities with the 2019 team, saying, “Of course we have like a new team, six or seven new players in the starting line. We just need to give them our advice. They are learning a lot and they are really nice guys. There are similarities from 2019, but of course the other guys achieve a lot and we have to give them credit. But I am sure we can do something special this year.”

In 2019/20, Liverpool dominated the Premier League, winning 26 of their first 27 games. Despite dropping points in five of their last ten games after the resumption of football following the first Covid-19 lockdown, they finished with a total of 99 points and an 18-point cushion over Manchester City.

The recent recruitment of new players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo mirrors the strategy Liverpool used in the years leading up to the 2019/20 season, when they brought in key players like Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, and Fabinho.

Of the 2019/20 squad, only Salah, Van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, and back-up goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian remain in the current squad.

Salah’s milestone goal and his comparison of the current squad to the championship-winning squad of 2019/20 have sparked excitement and optimism among Liverpool fans and have raised hopes of another successful campaign for the Reds this season.

As Liverpool continues to perform at the top of the Premier League table, the team’s resilience, fighting spirit, and new recruits under the guidance of manager Jurgen Klopp are providing fans with confidence and hope for a potentially memorable season.
