The 2023 Chronicles, Pt. 2: SVB, SBF, and More from OpenAI

Hello and welcome! This is Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we delve into the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. This is the second of a two-part series reviewing 2023. Mary Ann and Alex invited two colleagues to help us discuss some of the biggest events of the year. Here’s what we talked about!

Firstly, the decline and fall of SVB, which sent shockwaves throughout the global tech landscape. Venture was impacted and some startups actually received a boost from it.

The Chaos at OpenAI was another dramatic event this year. Sam Altman was ousted from his role at OpenAI, only to return shortly after, causing a significant uproar in the tech community.

SBF’s trial, which resulted in former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried being found guilty for various financial crimes. We invited Jacquie Melinek back on the show to re-examine the saga with us.
