‘The past 12 months have been incredibly challenging’

LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau has made a remarkable return to the Major League Soccer Cup after enduring a challenging 12 months filled with rehabilitation. The Canadian shot-stopper played a crucial role in leading his team to the 2022 MLS Cup final with stellar performances throughout the season that saw him make 76 saves and keep nine clean sheets.

The final against the Philadelphia Union was a poignant moment for LAFC, as they were on the verge of securing their first league trophy since joining MLS in 2018. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, forcing it into overtime, where Crepeau faced a tough challenge from the Union’s attackers, Daniel Gazdag and Jack Elliott.

However, in the 116th minute, Crepeau suffered a serious injury after colliding with Cory Burke, bringing the game to a halt. Medical staff rushed to his aid as the entire stadium fell silent. It was later revealed that Crepeau had broken his leg, dashing his hopes of participating in the World Cup and forcing him into a grueling rehabilitation process.

After months of hard work, Crepeau finally made a triumphant return to the pitch midway through the 2023 campaign. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “It’s been a hell of a 12 months, you know, going through the fact that I broke my leg, missing out on the World Cup and starting the process of rehab. There were ups and downs that is for sure.”

During his absence, John McCarthy took over as the team’s goalkeeper, leading to a healthy competition between the two players for the starting role. However, Crepeau managed to edge out his teammate and regain his position as the starting goalkeeper. His return to the lineup marked a significant moment for Crepeau and the team, as they geared up for the playoffs.

LAFC went on to secure victories against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders, and Houston Dynamo, setting up a date with destiny as they reached their second consecutive MLS Cup final. On December 9, they will attempt to make history by becoming back-to-back league champions, a feat achieved by only two other MLS teams.

Crepeau’s resilience and determination have been an inspiration to his teammates and fans, and his return to form has provided a significant boost to LAFC’s title aspirations. The goalkeeper’s journey from injury to recovery and his subsequent return to the field embodies the spirit of perseverance and determination, serving as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his team’s success.
