Arizona Governor Orders National Guard to Border Due to Federal Inaction on Migrant Influx

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, is taking a stand by deploying National Guard members to the southern border with Mexico due to issues with border security. In a press release, Ms. Hobbs criticized the federal government for failing to secure the border and protect local communities. The National Guard will be stationed at various locations along the southern border to assist law enforcement agencies in addressing issues such as fentanyl interdiction and human trafficking.

Hobbs also accused the Biden administration of ignoring her requests for assistance and reimbursement for border security spending, citing a lack of resources and manpower to manage the influx of migrants and maintain a secure border. She specifically highlighted the closure of the Lukeville Point of Entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as a contributing factor to the “unmitigated humanitarian crisis” and the risk to Arizona’s safety and commerce.

In a letter to President Biden, Ms. Hobbs urged the administration to reassign National Guard members to assist in reopening the Lukeville Point of Entry and requested reimbursement for over $512 million in costs incurred due to federal inaction. She emphasized the state’s expenditure on border operations, including migrant transportation, drug interdiction, and law enforcement, and called for the federal government to cover these expenses.

The decision to deploy National Guard members and address border security issues reflects the ongoing partisan debate over border policy, with Republicans advocating for stricter measures and Democrats emphasizing humanitarian concerns for migrants and asylum-seekers. President Biden has faced pressure from both Republicans and some Democrats to address the immigration burden, with CBP reporting an increase in migrant encounters in recent months, including a surge of unaccompanied children.

The deployment of National Guard members to the southern border will offer much-needed assistance to address border security challenges and help manage the flow of migrants. However, the ongoing debate over border policy and the allocation of resources underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of the issue. As the Biden administration continues to grapple with the demands of border security and the humanitarian needs of migrants, the deployment of the National Guard serves as a crucial step towards addressing these challenges.
