Griffin Dorsey signs a two-year contract with Houston Dynamo as defender

Houston Dynamo have re-signed full-back Griffin Dorsey after his impressive 2023 campaign, tying to the defender down to a two-year contract through the 2025 MLS season.

Dorsey enjoyed a terrific 2023 with Houston, making 33 appearances across all competitions while scoring five goals and dishing out four assists. The deal also contains a club option for the 2026 season for the 24-year-old.

The former Toronto FC player was key to the Dynamo returning to the postseason for the first time since 2017, as they reached the Western Conference final as well as winning the 2023 US Open Cup over Inter Miami. Dorsey scored the opening goal in the contest that took place at DRV PNK Stadium to secure the Dynamo’s first trophy since their 2018 Open Cup triumph.

Dorsey was part of the Houston defense that was practically a brick wall in 2023, as the team conceded only 38 goals across 34 regular season games (third-best in MLS).

“Re-signing Griffin was one of our priorities this offseason. He was not only an impact player in our U.S. Open Cup championship and run to the Western Conference Final, but his team-first mentality, competitiveness and commitment to everyday improvement are exemplars for every young player in our club,” said Houston general manager Pat Onstad.

“We could not be happier that Griffin and his wife have chosen to commit to the city of Houston, and we look forward to his continued growth in the coming seasons.”

Dorsey joined the Dynamo in 2021 and has since suited up for the Western Conference side 82 times, scoring eight goals. Prior to signing with Houston, Dorsey made 22 appearances with Toronto FC 2 before making five appearances with the first team at BMO Field.

“We’re so excited to be in Houston, and it’s an honor to be a part of this club. It’s just an exciting time for myself and my family,” Dorsey said.

“I’ve been here for close to three years now, and I’ve seen exponential growth. I believe that exponential growth is just going to continue. We are super excited for what’s on the horizon.”

After their brilliant first season under first-year head coach Ben Olsen, Houston will look to continue their success with the likes of Dorsey, Amine Bassi, Hector Herrera, Coco Carrasquilla leading the way.
